What to Expect at a Beginner-Friendly Flower Arranging Class

If you've ever thought about joining your first Beginner-Friendly flower arranging class but weren't quite sure what to expect, you're in good company. Most of the lovely people who joined us in May for our Seasonal Flower Workshop felt exactly the same — curious, a little nervous, and wondering whether they'd be “any good.”

This blog is for you if you're sitting on the fence. We’re sharing a little behind-the-scenes of that May class, so you can get a feel for what actually happens when you step through our studio doors here at Bedfordshire Flower School.

A calm, friendly space to learn new Floristry skills

Our May class brought together a group of first-time students — people who had never picked up floristry scissors before but were keen to try something creative and seasonal. We had a pair of friends, but most students came by themselves.

The atmosphere was relaxed, with a good balance of tuition and time to play. As always, we had hot drinks, homemade brownies and quiet moments to chat in between the flower arranging.

By the end of the session, each student had created a rustic spring arrangement they were genuinely proud of. More than one person said they were surprised by what they managed to create — which we love to hear.

Using locally grown flowers (with beautiful staying power)

For this May Floristry workshop, we used a seasonal selection of British-grown blooms, including alliums that had just come into their own here on Franklins Farm. These sculptural purple heads were a real highlight, adding height, drama and structure to each design.

Many of the flowers we chose to include in this arrangement will dry naturally, so students took home arrangements that will keep looking beautiful for weeks — if not months — to come. This approach to floristry is thoughtful and sustainable, and it’s something we love sharing in class.
