Mother's Day

Why do we celebrate Mother's Day?

Mother's Day is an occasion honouring the mother of the family, or individual.

To express respect, honour and love towards mothers.

As well as celebrating motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in our society.

It is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, mainly in the months of March and May

Who started Mother's Day in the UK?

Inspired by Anna Jarvis who founded Mother's Day in the United States, some say, Constance Penswick-Smith created the Mothering Sunday movement, here in the UK.

In 1921, over a hundred years ago, she wrote a book asking for the revival of the festival.

Though some historians say that Mother's Day came to be celebrated in the UK in the 17th century, much before the custom began in the US.

Mothering Sunday, or Mother's Day is also linked to Easter in our calendar. It is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
